It was another heartbreaking defeat last season for the Maple Leafs in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After storming back to tie the series at three apiece, the Bruins took the elimination game and sent Toronto packing in yet another disappointing first round exit.
But it seems that Boston had some extra motivation, as former forward Patrick Maroon revealed, and their pep talk in the locker room was the critical factor:
It seems pretty standard that a team would want to go out there and win, but for Boston it was do or die. It motivates a player when they have a bit of recklessness and given that Boston needed to make a statement, they came out firing.
Although the game was a close affair with Boston winning 2-1, the team felt like they could have played any number of periods with the exact same energy. Being on the ropes after a Maple Leafs comeback was not where the Bruins needed to be and their fight or flight kicked in; and they came out victorious.
Jake DeBrusk has consistently had the Maple Leafs' number over the past several seasons and his confidence in knowing he can turn the tide of the game gives confidence to his teammates knowing that his success is inevitible.
With nine goals and five assists against Toronto in the playoffs, it's clear that DeBrusk has always been Toronto's kryptonite, and while he's out West in Vancouver now, it doesn't take away how much he changed those matchups.
Jeremy Swayman also got in on the fun and performed spectacularly as Toronto had no answer for the young netminder; however if the Leafs' own goaltender didn't suffer an injury then things could have been a lot different.
Boston always seems to have the Maple Leafs' number, and it doesn't matter if it's 2013 or 2024; it seems the Bruins are able to easily take a bite out of their rivals playoff hopes.
