Max Domi, son of Maple Leafs legend Tie, has brought a youthful exuberance to the Maple Leafs as the veteran forward has brought fans to their feet due to his toughness, passion and clear love for the team and the city. That translated into a 4-year, $15M contract with the Maple Leafs and while he will certainly do his part to try and help Toronto end a 56-year championship drought, he may need to get the fans back on his side first.
Recently on Domi shared a story on his Instagram page that sent love and support to former NHLer Tony DeAngelo, who recently signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL after not being able to lock down a job in North America.
The story was in response to DeAngelo's own Instagram post about moving his career to Russia:
DeAngelo, an National Hockey League veteran who spent time with the New York Rangers, Arizona Coyotes, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers has been no stranger to controversy in his career with multiple allegations of racism during his time in the OHL, as well as his suspension during his time in Arizona for abusing officials, not to mention his fight with former New York Rangers teammate Alex Georgiev. Oh, and there's also the New York Rangers teammate Alex Georgiev' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>negative posts during the pandemic which caused his Twitter to be deactivated; due to that post and his ardent support for former President Donald Trump and supported his claim on rigged elections.
So, with all that being said: Why would Domi endorse such a negative and controversial person? Sure, Domi and DeAngelo had some time together as teammates but you can learn a lot from a person just from how they interact with society. Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence; the amount of times DeAngelo has caused controversy or made a terrible life decision is definitely in the pattern stage. Domi would be best to steer himself away from DeAngelo, given his track record and also Domi not necessarily always being innocent; he has had to rebuild the fans' trust before and will need to again.
Max Domi isn't a bad person, and he wants to wish someone he has known for years the best in his future endeavors. Perhaps though, Domi should have left things private in this regard because Toronto doesn't need any distractions this season.
