Mitch Marner opens up about his future with the Maple Leafs
Mitch Marner opened up about his future with the Toronto Maple Leafs during his post-season media availability.
A lot of people were eager to know what Mitch Marner would say to the media today, after he refused to meet with them following the disappointing game 7 loss.
About the loss, Marner said that it still wasn't easy, even after all these years:
"It's the same shitty pain, to be honest."
Talking about what it means for him to be a member of the Maple Leafs, his answer raised a few eyebrows. Indeed, he compared himself and his teammates to gods:
"Here's the quote from Marner about what it means to be a Leaf "It means the world. Obviously, we're looked upon as kind of gods here, to be honest, and (it's) something that you really appreciate...and the love that you get here from this fan base and it's unlike any other."
Later, he talked about his upcoming contract extension, and how he plans to stay in Toronto long-term.
"Mitch Marner on his desire to stay in Toronto on a long-term extension: "That'd be a goal. I've expressed my love for this place, this city. Obviously I've grown up here. We'll start thinking about that now and trying to figure something out."
We should know more about Marner's contractual situation over the summer. As of now, rumors state that his days in Toronto could be over. However, his declaration about how he wants to stay in Toronto long-term could help. Whit Matthews and Nylander already getting paid a lot of money, Brad Treliving will need to manoeuver under the salary cap, which won't be easy.
