With Toronto leading 2-0 in the first period of their game against the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night, after Anaheim pulled within one it seems that goaltender Anthony Stolarz suffered an injury, as he left the game and won't return.
It's a worrying sign for the Maple Leafs star, and there were serious talks about him being in the running for the league's best goaltender.
But now, with those aspirations on hold for the time being, we can try and pinpoint how the injury went down.
Thanks to @TicTacTOmar on X, the clip below is right after the goal and it shows Stolarz trying to stretch out an apparent hamstring or quad injury.
Joseph Woll ended up taking over in the crease for the Maple Leafs as the concerns start to grow about the severity and extent of Stolarz's injury.
From the looks of it, it seems pretty innocuous and harmless, though it's undetermined without further evaluation.
Hopefully for the Maple Leafs and for Stolarz it's nothing more than a charley horse or a cramp that made him feel uncomfortable and would have rather taken himself out as a precaution as opposed to anything serious.
It would be an incredible loss for the Maple Leafs if they were to be without Stolarz for any amount of time. This season he has been incredible, and stamped his name as one of the NHL's best.
Recording a 9-5-2 record to go along with a 2.13 GAA and .928 SV%, those numbers rank him in the top of the NHL for goals against and save percentage, and is a huge reason as to why Toronto has been so successful this season.
An absolute bargain signing this summer at $5M over two years, Stolarz has shown that not only is he the league's best backup, but he has always had the potential to break out and be a star; something he's doing this year.
All Maple Leafs fans can do is hold their breath as they await the results of Stolarz's injury and how the team can look going forward.
Toronto's desperately hoping they didn't just see their playoff hopes go up in smoke in the blink of an eye.
