Potential trade materialising sending Mitch Marner to the New York Rangers
There is lots of chatter regarding a potential blockbuster deal that would see Mitch Marner don a New York Rangers jersey.
The rumoured trade would see Mitch Marner sent to the New York Rangers in exchange for former 1st overall pick Alexis Lafrenière and captain Jacob Trouba. This has sparked significant debate in the NHL world today, leading many to believe this is a forced trade due to contractual issues.
It's no secret the Leafs had defensive issues last season, as several key players, such as John Klingberg, missed significant time with injuries. Jacob Trouba is not only the captain of the Rangers, but a very experienced defenceman.
He would bring a big physical component to the Leafs back end, as well as great leadership. Not only would Trouba be able to put in big minutes every night, but he makes $2.8 million less than Mitch Marner.
Alexis Lafrenière was the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, but hasn't lived up to the hype. Perhaps a change of scenery would do the Canadian some good. He has a cap hit of $2.3 million, so combined with Trouba's salary, this trade would save the Leafs $500,000 in cap space.
Now that the dust is starting to settle from the July 1st free agent frenzy, perhaps a trade between these two teams is closing in.
