This play saw TSN'a Mike Johnson left in outrage, the play occured in the 2nd period when the officials stopped the play after Vegas's goalie Adin Hill had lost his skate blade.
Hill who uses goalie skates with a quick trigger release to easily swap steel out of the boot, had his left blade pop out after making a push across the net.
Nowhere in the rule book does it say the officials have to stop the play because of this and it all other cases the refs continue the play without stopping the play.
This has always lead people to wonder whether or not the play should be stopped for goalies that lose their blades.
This debate has been going on since the popularization of these quick trigger holders being made by Bauer, CCM and True whether or not the play is stopped fans will argue it is against their team.
We have seen this happen to other goalies in the league and it lead to goals because the goalie is unable to push over and make the save but the play never gets blown down.
A prime example of this is New York Islanders goalie Ilya Sorokin lost his blade and had to watch as the Winnipeg Jets got a free goal due to him being unable to move across.
This call in the Leafs game ultimately wasn't the reason they lost but it looks bad that this is the first time the officials have blown the play dead for the goalie losing his blade.
As Seen on Maple Leafs Daily - Controversial call by the officials in last night's Leafs/Golden Knights game clearly violates the NHL rulebook
