The Toronto Maple Leafs and John Tavares have had a happy partnership ever since the eventual captain signed in free agency. However, a new report has indicated this was almost not the case.
Insider Chris Johnston joined the Steve Dangle Podcast and confirmed that the San Jose Sharks offered a massive contract to John Tavares when he was a free agent.
At the time when this contract was offered by the San Jose Sharks the team looked quite different. Instead of being bottom feeders in the NHL they were perenniel playoff contenders that would go on to reach the Conference Finals the year after losing out on John Tavares.
Of course, instead of heading out West and joining the Sharks John Tavares would instead return home. Signing a 7-year deal worth $11 million in AAV a significant discount over the reported offer by the San Jose Sharks.
Since then John Tavares has become the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and one of the most beloved players on the team. On a team success side of things John Tavares and the Maple Leafs have not found the success they have hoped to.
Heading into the final year of his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs John Tavares will once again try and bring that elusive Stanley Cup home to the city of Toronto.
