Amidst all the big injuries and inconsistencies, there are several bright spots to look at for the Maple Leafs. Improved defense, the reemergence of Auston Matthews as a threat, and the fantastic performance of Joseph Woll even when there's a heavy chip on his shoulders.
But for forward Bobby McMann, he's shown that he might be shining the brightest, especially given their injuries.
McMann has had a breakout season with 13 goals and eight assists, and is only two goals off of matching last year's total with a ton of games to go. His recent performance and the rash of injuries has led to him earning top minutes alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner.
On Friday, McMann lined up alongside the team's superstars and while the injuries are a very big reason as to why, there's no doubt he's earned the spot.
McMann has earned himself a lot more ice time recently and it's paid off, as he's had at least a point in the last three games. For the forward, it's led to a whole slew of added confidence as well.
To go along with his 13 goals and eight assists, he's added 14 blocks, 68 hits, has nearly as many takeaways as giveaways, and increased his TOI from 11:34 last season to 14:41 this year.
Deceptively fast, McMann can turn on the jets when needed and often finds himself winning battles which lead to scoring opportunities.
If McMann can find chemistry with Matthews and Marner, it'll be a scary trio for opponents as the amount of speed, scoring, playmaking, and defense will be tough for anyone to contend with.
McMann will get a chance to prove he belongs with the cream of the crop as Toronto takes on Ottawa in the Battle of Ontario on Saturday night as the Leafs head to the Canadian Tire Centre; the puck is scheduled to drop at 7pm ET.
