The Toronto Maple Leafs forward group is one of the most top heavy in the NHL, and with training camp approaching, speculation has continued that General Manager Brad Treliving could use one of their young names to boost the bottom-six moving forward. Now, their latest potential target has been revealed as Calgary's Blake Coleman, who is a two-time Stanley Cup Champion during his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
There's plenty of packages that Toronto could put together for the rebuilding Flames, but no piece would be better than a 22-year old who has already requested a trade from the Maple Leafs in recent times.
On paper, this deal could be a win-win for both teams, as it makes the Flames worse during their potential tank, while also giving them a player of the future and yet another pick for new GM Craig Conroy to work his magic with. However, this deal will always be complicated given the relationship between the Flames and Maple Leafs GM Treliving, who was hesitant to do business with them in recent times.
In Coleman, the Maple Leafs would get an experienced veteran that could play a key role on their third line following a career year in 2023/24 that saw him tally 30 goals and 54 points in 79 games played.
At 32-years of age, Coleman is approaching the end of his career, but with over 30 points scored in each of his past four seasons, he can still help a contending team now, and if both teams want to benefit, this type of move would certainly accomplish that.
