Nick Robertson has struggled to find his fit within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. As a result, reports have indicated that Nick Robertson has requested a trade to get a fresh start in a new organization.
Since this trade request, there have been several rumblings about a new home for Nick Robertson. Today a mock trade has been put together that would bring a former 2nd overall pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs bringing a major scoring boost to the lineup.
The mock trade that has been put together would send Nick Robertson to the Columbus Blue Jackets along with David Kampf, Calle Jarnkrok, and a 1st round pick. In return, the Toronto Maple Leafs would get elite sniper Patrik Laine who is looking for a new home himself and a 2026 2nd round pick.
The Columbus Blue Jackets would continue to add to their young core with Nick Robertson who has struggled at the NHL level with just 34 points in 87 NHL games. But at 22 years old has plenty of time to improve and develop.
The Toronto Maple Leafs would land Patrik Laine who spent much of last season in the NHLPA Player Assistance Program. He has since been cleared to return and wants a fresh start. At his best, Patrik Laine is a 30 to 40-goal scorer with point-per-game potential. Pairing him with some of the elite playmakers on the Maple Leafs could even improve that potential.
As of now, this proposal remains a rumor and far from a completed trade. If a trade like this does go down it could be one where all sides feel like they came out a winner.
