The Dallas Stars seemed like one of the best NHL teams on paper. Despite their dominating lineup, the team struggled to make it to the Western Conference Finals before losing to the Edmonton Oilers in six games.
However, the team seems to have fallen off even harder after the Stanley Cup Finals ended with Florida victorious. In what seemed a part of their lackluster offseason trading strategy, they granted the Toronto Maple Leafs rights to Chris Tanev, leading to a six-year contract worth $27 million.
Provided how important Tanev was to the Dallas Stars' defensive strategy, many wondered what the player turned down to move up north. Former NHLer and sports journalist Nick Kypreos revealed that the team offered him $5 million per year but for only half the time Toronto offered.
With a much less impressive offer security-wise and a chance to play in his hometown, the choice seems pretty clear for Chris Tanev. Hopefully, the player can perform for Toronto, otherwise the Maple Leafs may later regret this long-term deal.
