The apparent reasoning for the Toronto Maple Leafs AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, signing Alex Nylander has been revealed, and does not just involve his brother William, but a potential smart move from GM Brad Treliving.

When Nylander signed an AHL deal with the Toronto Marlies, there was an obvious connection to be made between Alex and his brother William, a star for the Leafs.

William's standing no doubt played a part, but a report adds further to the reasoning behind Nylander's signing, and why there's a glimmer of hope of him potentially becoming an option for the big team.

According to The Hockey News, an additional consideration for the Toronto Maple Leafs is the lack of forward depth without adds to the main roster.

Nylander, with NHL experience, could compete for a spot in training camp with the Leafs. With rumors of a potential trade for forward Nick Robertson, the current depth group could be even more weakened, with top prospects Easton Cowan & Fraser Minten uncertain to win spots just yet.

Alex adds another potential option to fill a spot if needed. Even if he doesn't make the roster, he could be a key AHLer without taking up a NHL contract spot.

Nylander, a former first round draft pick, selected eight overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, the same spot as William two years prior.

Nylander had 11 goals and 15 points in 23 points for the Columbus Blue Jackets last season after going pointless in 5 games for Pittsburgh earlier in the year.
