Stamkos, 34, is set to become a free agent on July 1st. While his goal is to remain in Tampa Bay, and the Bolts' organization mentionned many times that they want to keep him, nothing's certain at this point. They don't have a lot of money available and if Stamkos wants to earn the money he deserves, he might not have a choice but to sign somewhere else.
Sportsnet just released a new report, in which we learned that four teams are frontrunners to get him. Among those are the Toronto Maple Leafs.
At this stage of his career, it would make sense for Stamkos to join a team with high aspirations to win the Stanley Cup.
This season, he scored 40 goals and 41 assists in 79 games with the Lightning, in addition of six point, including five goals, in five playoff games. He showed that he can still be a valuable asset to a team, which explains why other teams could be interested, such as the Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings and Nashville Predators.
In Toronto, the powerplay has struggled immensely in the playoffs. Stamkos, who's among the best players to have on a powerplay, could be a part of the solution for Brad Treliving.
