It was a tough loss for the Maple Leafs against the Anaheim Ducks; and while they won the actual game itself, it came at a big cost as they lost goaltender Anthony Stolarz to an injury.
It was a fairly innocent but worrying incident that led to speculation about what the injury would be, and the potential severity that could spell disaster for the Maple Leafs.
Head coach Craig Berube was able to do his best to ease the anxious Leafs fanbase as he noted that Anthony Stolarz was day-to-day and it was an optimistic outlook.
When asked if he believes Stolarz will be back after the weekend, the coach was positive but honest:
It's a huge positive for the Maple Leafs as they will look to Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby to hold down the fort while Stolarz manages his minor injury.
It's a positive sign for Toronto but it's still unfortunate news for the team. Stolarz was having a brilliant season since signing with the Leafs in the summer.
He has a 9-5-2 record with a 2.15 GAA and .927 SV% and was in serious considerations for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender, as he leads or is near the top of several categories.
In his absence, Toronto will rely on Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby in between the pipes, and while Hildeby only has a little bit of experience, since Woll's return from injury he's been fantastic as well.
Woll has a 8-3-0 record with a 2.16 GAA and .921 SV%; only a few points behind Stolarz as the two are a big reason for Toronto being able to keep themselves in games.
Toronto will face Detroit on Saturday and will presumably look to Woll to prevent any further damage, and get them back on top of the Atlantic Division all by themselves.
