Russian government screws Alex Ovechkin over for evading taxes
Alex Ovechkin has had his bank account frozen in Russia due to unpaid debts and he must pay them before he can do anything else.
Alex Ovechkin has been the face of Russian hockey for years now as one of the NHL's most lethal snipers and arguably the greatest goal scorer of all time. The Washington Capitals captain is on quite an expensive contract worth an average annual value of $9.5 million.
It was reported today that the multimillionaire Ovechkin had his bank account frozen by the Russian government due to unpaid debts worth just over $500 USD.
"Championat reports that Alex Ovechkin's professional bank account has been frozen due to a 543 US dollar debt in federal taxes.
It's not a good time to owe money to the government over there, I suppose." - Andrew Zadarnowski
While $543 may be a lot to you and me, to a guy like Ovechkin it is pennies. This was most likely an error from his accountant and with such a small amount, Ovechkin will likely be able to pay it off easily.
It is unknown if Ovechkin has since paid his debts but given how he makes millions a year, he likely has by now.
UPDATE: The debt was reportedly not Ovechkin's fault.
