Report Confirms The Future Of The Winnipeg Jets After Low Attendance Numbers
The Winnipeg Jets have had a rough start to the season. On the ice the team is in a playoff spot but behind the scenes is turmoil.
Jets Struggle To Attract Fans
The Winnipeg Jets have struggled to bring fans into their building. Averaging by far the lowest attendance numbers each night at around 11,000. The disappointing part in all of this is the team is supposed to be a Stanley Cup contender and still fans don't seem interested.
The Jets just re-signed stars Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck. Tickets are only 28 dollars on re-sale markets and still fans are not coming to games. This has one NHL media personally furious.
The Winnipeg Jets attendance issue makes zero sense.
Due to the low attendance numbers many fans have been wondering the future of the team. With fans not showing up could relocation be possible?
NHL Insider Speaks With Jets Owner About The Future
NHL insider Darren Dreger recently spoke with Winnipeg Jets owner Mark Chipman about the state of the franchise. This included potential relocation rumors.
Dreger asked: «Is there any real threat of a sale, a relocation if this can't get turned around?»
Chipman: «No»
Chipman goes on to talk about how despite being the smallest market the Jets have succeeded in the past. He is hopeful they will get back to their past success in regard to attendance.
I can see how somebody might, how you can ask that question, you know, because it happened once is it a concern it could happen again because you're the smallest market. I'd say Not on our watch'. We've been doing this far too long. We got into this for the very reason, for that heartbreak that you describe. It was that very emotion that brought us into this, that kept us in the fight to get a building built and then to acquire a team again. And then to have ten years of sellouts and two years of challenge brought on by a global pandemic. It would be a little extreme for us to say Oh gee we're not sure this works anymore'.
While the Jets might not be worried now they cannot afford to make low attendance a trend. Hopefully for the city and the league the team becomes a draw again and they get back to selling out the arena on a nightly basis.
