With the pandemic hitting the world, the NHL has obviously not been spared. The result is disastrous in terms of the salary cap, while the increase is minimal and will be for another two years.

According to player agent Allan Walsh, there is a solution to raising the cap and thus giving more green to Bettman Circuit teams:

"With so many NHL teams meeting or exceeding the cap and NHL revenues recovering from the pandemic faster than expected and breaking records, why doesn't the NHL propose to ease the "escrow" debt repayment in the remaining years of the collective bargaining agreement?

As it stands now, the limit will only increase by $1 million in each of the next 2 years and then rise to over $8 million in 2025-26. If you alleviate the escrow debt, this would allow the cap to increase by $3.5 million each year for the next 3 years.

NHL clubs will have increased cap space to sign their players and will not be locked in for the next two seasons, with no alternative but to give away good players with no assets. Win-win for everyone."

We know that the "escrow" is used to ensure that there will be 50-50 parity between the players and the NHL in terms of revenue. Now that the NHL is reaching record profits, according to Allan Walsh, it would be time to ease that until the end of the collective agreement in September 2026, which would allow the salary cap to be increased more equitably over the next three years, rather than very little in the first two seasons, followed by a big increase in three years.
