According to Elliott Teaford, Ryan Getzlaf is expected to return to the Anaheim Ducks next season. Before the start of free agency, he should have signed a contract with them. There had been rumours that he might retire, so this is encouraging news.
Getzlaf has spent his entire 16-year career with the Ducks, and as a result, he is one of the franchise's most illustrious figures. He has 279 goals and 982 points in 1,101 games in his career. If he stays healthy this season, he should be able to reach the 1,000-point mark with relative ease.
The 36-year-old centre is no longer a first-line centre, but he is still a valuable NHL player at this point. Keeping veterans on the team during a rebuild can be beneficial because they can be excellent mentors to the young players. Keep in mind that he has won a Stanley Cup, so he's been through a lot.
Nonetheless, another potential pending UFA is no longer on the table.
