Auston Matthews Most Likely Won't Re-Sign Long Term in Toronto, Insider Reports
While just months ago, Chris Johnston reported that he believed that Auston Matthews would sign a max-contract (20% of the cap at the year of signing for eight years) with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it is looking much less certain now.
On TJMS, one of the most influential and well-respected insiders in the sport, Elliotte Friedman reported that he doesn't believe that Auston Matthews would sign long term in Toronto.
I think he's re-signing in Toronto, I don't necessarily think it will be a long-term extension but I think he will extend, but my caveat always was, the big concern is what if this thing goes off the rails?
They do have to monitor how Matthews feels, I don't have any reason to believe right now that he's unhappy or he's got a big problem or anything like that, but they constantly have to take his temperature.
Without Matthews, the Leafs would be left with the aging John Tavares as their first-line center. If the team can't go all the way soon, they may never be able to.
