Don Cherry Under Fire AGAIN For Tasteless Comments
Whether you love him or hate him, Don Cherry is a fixture in the hockey world.
The 88-year-old may not be live on Hockey Night in Canada anymore, but whenever he speaks out, he's heard.
Him being constantly in the spotlight has led to some controversies, and the latest is thanks to Alex Ovechkin.
Ovechkin, or The Great 8 is probably the best goal-scorer in NHL history. He is also of Russian descent, and he is a faithful supporter of Vladimir Putin's totalitarian regime.
There are many Russian players in the NHL, but there are few that are as supportive of Putin as Ovechkin is. His profile picture on Twitter features the two of them together.
With the Ukraine/Russia war ensuing, Cherry decided to bring the issue back up - in strong support of Ovechkin:
He's a hockey player. He has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. None of this is his fault. He's not involved in it.
It's the same crowd that went after me. They don't care about hockey, and it's not about hockey. Alex is a great player and great person, and he deserves better than to be treated like this.
It's all about how he is playing and this guy, as he goes for Wayne (Gretzky's) goal scoring record of 894, is playing hard.
So, Cherry views are very clear. He was fired over racist comments, so he understands the vitality potential of the media.
Whether you agree with him or not, he won't back down.
