The excellent Elliotte Friedman discussed several hot topics in his most recent podcast 32 Thoughts.

The main topic was the major trade between the Panthers and Flames, sending Tkachuk to Florida and Huberdeau to Calgary.

As reported by my colleague William Nadeau of habsetlnh.com, Panthers GM Bill Zito is very aware that with the departure of a big piece also on defense with Weegar, his team has not improved in the short-term.

"I'm curious to see how their various risky bets turn out. [...] I really think on the Panthers, they've said to themselves, 'A year of disappointments, and we think in the long run it's going to be better for us.'" - Elliotte Friedman

So, as you can see, this is great news for the Montreal Canadiens.

Why? Because they have the Panthers' first round pick in the next draft. A pick that is not protected, let's remember.

Friedman even used the words "one year of pain" for the Panthers next season.

With Ben Chiarot leaving for Detroit, let's just say that the Panthers defense will have some trouble next season.

It's quite a home run for Kent Hughes, who sent Chiarot to Florida for more or less 20 games in return for next year's first pick and prospect Ty Smilanic, among others.
