The Carolina Hurricanes' Dougie Hamilton has been in the news a lot recently because of his comments about the Tampa Bay Lightning, and on Monday, all eyes were on his future in Carolina. The Hurricanes have apparently allowed the free-agent defensemen to speak with other teams about a new contract.
A sign-and-trade appears to be the next stage, as Friedman points out. When Hamilton receives a deal from another team that he likes, his representative will contact Carolina and initiate talks between the two teams.
Hamilton is undoubtedly the most well-known name slated to enter the free-agent market, and a number of teams are expected to be interested. Allowing him to speak with other teams actually increases the amount of teams interested because if they don't have cap capacity to sign him as a free agent, they can now send some salary to the Hurricanes in exchange for cap space.
The Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks are among the teams rumoured to be interested in Hamilton. All three teams have varying amounts of cap room and could be willing to work out a deal to get Hamilton for next season and beyond.
