Fleury revealed during an NHL on TNT intermission show that he simply did not enjoy the prospect of playing for a Capitals franchise with which he has fought so bitterly in the past.
Fleury was, of course, a long-time member of the Pittsburgh Penguins team, and for many years, the Penguins and Capitals were bitter rivals, clashing frequently throughout both the regular season and playoffs.
According to Fleury, it would have been completely inappropriate for him to play for the Capitals club after spending so much time on the other side of the rivalry.
"It simply didn't seem right," Fleury said on TNT.
It's intriguing to learn that a rivalry in which he hasn't participated in several years still weighs heavily on his thoughts.
That he would forego a shot at a Stanley Cup with the Capitals due to how much that rivalry, and perhaps by extension his time as a Pittsburgh Penguin, meant to him is something I feel many fans will regard with adoration and respect.
