NHL Looking to Massively Overhaul Regular Season Schedule
Massively indebted during the pandemic, the NHL still owes owners $70-million in escrow.
This has sparked desperate measures to try and increase profits. Some of these measures, such as digital board ads, jersey patches, and helmet ads.
Now, the NHL is supposedly looking at a schedule overhaul in order to maximize profits off of high-earning games.
Team owners and executives have recently discussed efforts to create more games between geographic rivalsand ultimately generate more money.
As soon as next season, teams like Edmonton and Calgary could play as many as eight games against each other, rather than the current three.
The idea behind this shift was partially bolstered by the NHL's COVID-disrupted 2020-21 season, when the league redrew all four divisions.
These changes could come as soon as next season, with divisional rivals such as Montreal-Toronto, Calgary-Edmonton, and Rangers-Islanders playing as much as eight times per season, rather than three.
Is this a welcome change for the league, or is this just a desperation play to make up some lost cash?
