Rumours of Pierre-Luc Dubois coming to Montreal were everywhere this summer. The Quebecer was out of contract and even showed up at the Bell Centre for the NHL draft.

When Gary Bettman announced that there were two trades to be announced and that the Tricolore was involved, everyone was convinced that Dubois was coming to Montreal. We all know the end of the story and Dubois ended up signing a one-year contract with the Jets.

According to Pierre LeBrun, the reasons are quite simple: there is a real common interest between the Habs and Dubois.

The information came out publicly last summer that Dubois did not want to sign long-term with the Jets. He will be RFA again next summer, with salary arbitration, and one season away from full autonomy. This brings to mind the Matthew Tkachuk issue and the circumstances surrounding his departure from Calgary. [...]

If the Jets fall apart and slip out of the playoff race, maybe Dubois could be traded at the trade deadline, but as long as Winnipeg is in a position to compete for a playoff spot, it will have to wait until this summer. [...]

I can confirm that the Habs have shown interest, already, in acquiring Dubois. They would definitely be among the teams that will try to acquire him if he is made available." - Pierre LeBrun

This confirms that the Habs are really interested in bringing Dubois to Montreal and that the centre also has a palpable interest in playing for the CH.

With the success of Kirby Dach on the wing, the team's second centre position is now up for grabs and it should come as no surprise if Kent Hughes decides to leave it vacant until Dubois becomes independent in the summer of 2024.
