According to Anthony Martineau of TVA Sports, Brendan Gallagher could be part of a "fire sale."
Martineau has been accusing Gallagher of selfish play since the start of the season. His scuffle with Alexander Romanov during practice, and the recent sucker punch of Barclay Goodrow.
His newfound cap charge of $6.25 million per season may prove to be too much for the Canadiens in the future, so trading him now, while his reputation for hard effort is still appealing to playoff teams, makes the most sense.
It could necessitate some salary retention, but it would free up space in the prospect pipeline for the Habs' long list of forwards.
The 29-year-old is under contract until 2026-27 and has a six-team trade list.
