After the terrible tragedy that happened to Adam Johnson over the weekend, the NHL is potentially taking the next steps to change its rules to require neckguards.

NHL Taking Next Steps Regarding Neckguards After Tragedy

The NHL's Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly was on the NHL Network Radio this morning to discuss various things NHL, and the tragic incident regarding Adam Johnson was brought up. Daly discussed how he and Gary Bettman have been talking to the NHLPA about the neck guard issue in order to get it on their radar.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly tells NHL Network Radio that Gary Bettman has been in contact with Marty Walsh of the PA to get the neck guard issue 'on the radar'. Daly says the NHL is strongly recommending the use of neck guards.

NHL Coaches Already Requesting Neckguards Mandated

The issue is being put front and center for the NHL to decide on, as even some NHL coaches are speaking out on the matter. Columbus Head Coach Pascal Vincent had some strong words requesting the NHL change its rules.

#CBJ coach Pascal Vincent with some strong words today about the need for more protection for players such as neck and ear guards in light of what happened to Adam Johnson. He said he felt sadness and disbelief when he heard the news. «But what's the cost?»

Player safety decisions ultimately need to come from the top, as players have historically shown they will not make changes themselves (just look at how helmets had to be implemented).
