ESPN has recently put together a list of their top 100 athletes of the 21st century, and unsurprisingly, their disrespect of the NHL continues.
In North America, the United States specifically, the NHL is highly disrespected in comparison to the NBA and the NFL, and that has continued in ESPN's recent list.
Today, ESPN published their ranking of the top 100 professional athletes of the 21st century, voted on by ESPN «experts.»
3 hockey players made it into the top 100:
22nd - Sidney Crosby
54th - Alex Ovechkin
98th - Connor McDavid On the surface, 22nd overall for Sidney Crosby isn't the worst ranking, as the names ahead of him are all time greats like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, Michael Phelps, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams, all of whom can be considered G.O.A.T in their respective sports.
On the other hand, McDavid, who has won the NHL's Hart Trophy for MVP three times by the age of 27 comes in at 98, with many, many names ahead of him not as great in their own sport.
It's safe to say that fans certainly weren't happy by the decisions made by the ESPN's 70,000 votes for this list.
Given the popularity of the other sports, this may not change anytime soon, but if McDavid continues on his current pace, there could be an argument one day that he is up there with Wayne Gretzky as the greatest hockey player of all time.
