The Buffalo Sabres are in the midst of another middling season and although the Atlantic Division is getting tighter and tighter as each game passes, it's very unlikely the Sabres get a chance to make the playoffs for the first time in over a decade.
But it seems even through their struggles they have an expectation and for former Maple Leafs forward Nicholas Aube-Kubel, he didn't meet them. The Sabres waived Aube-Kubel on Monday per NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.
The news was also relayed and confirmed by TVA Sports reporter Renaud Lavoie on X.
Aube-Kubel has only one goal and one assist in 19 games with Buffalo, and was part of a trio of former Maple Leafs who signed with their highway rivals this summer along with James Reimer and Sam Lafferty.
As a member of the Maple Leafs in 2022-23, he only played in six games for the team while registering no points, adding 4 PIM and a minus-1. Though he did win a Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 2021-22, and added 22 points in 67 games but none in 14 playoff games.
Originally drafted 48th overall by the Flyers in 2014, he never could translate his incredible offensive production in the QMJHL to the NHL level.
In junior hockey, he scored 108 goals and 136 assists in 251 games for the Val d'Or Foreurs.
With Philly he scored 10 goals and 17 assists in 102 games before heading to Colorado, then Toronto, Washington and this season in Buffalo.
Teams will have until 2pm on Tuesday in order to place a claim on Aube-Kubel, and will most likely be demoted to the Rochester Americans unless Buffalo decides to just outright release him.
He signed a one-year, $1.5M contract with Buffalo this summer and is a free agent at season's end.
