Jeff Marek finally breaks his silence after his disappearance
Sportsnet reporter and host Jeff Marek made a sad announcement today on social media, revealing that he has parted ways with the network.
This news may be sad, but it is not entirely unsurprising considering what has been going on behind the scenes at Sportsnet this summer.
Jeff Marek's primary role with Sportsnet was hosting his own show, as well as the 32 thoughts podcast with Elliotte Friedman. While it is normal for these shows to take breaks or have reduced upload schedules in the offseason, neither show has had an episode since night one of the 2024 NHL draft, which came nearly a month ago.
Jeff Marek confirms reports that he is no longer with Sportsnet.
Jeff released a full statement on his private X account, where he thanks Sportsnet for his time with the company while also shouting out his fans, who have been very supportive and vocal lately.
Firstly, thanks for the outpouring of kinds words on Twitter/X. It really means the world to me.
After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I'm moving on. It's been an incredible journey and I'm thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon.
- Jeff
Many of Marek's fans were disappointed to hear this news, but several expressed optimism in what comes next. Given his name recognition and reputation, it should not be long before he finds a new job covering the sport we all love.
I know your humility won't allow you to acknowledge this, but myself and so many others thought you should've been the next HNIC host.
You represent the gold standard for both coverage in hockey media and the next generation of broadcasters.
Excited to hear what's next for you.
In response to this news, 32 thoughts founder and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed his thoughts on the situation. He shared a short story about how Marek joined the podcast, and thanked him for all his years of support. Notably, he also confirmed that the podcast will continue. It seems that Friedman could be looking for a new host, which would explain the lack of episodes over the past month.
When we started the podcast, Sportsnet asked if I wanted to do it myself or have a co-host. I liked the idea of playing off someone; @moorescottmoore suggested Jeff Marek.
It was brilliant. Jeff has his loopy suggestions, but they made for fun debates and great moments.
Life throws curveballs at you. I will miss being his teammate, and thank him for being a tremendous co-pilot on the start to our 32 Thoughts podcasting voyage which will continue.
That being said, Friedman could very well make it a solo show for now on. Only time will tell what will come of the 32 thoughts podcast. Meanwhile, we are all wishing the best for Jeff and hope to see him covering the NHL once again.
