Sean Higgins, accused of murdering Johnny Gaudreau and his little brother Matthew Gaudreau in a drunk driving accident, was back in court this week. But he sure didn't look the same as he did the last time out. The 43-year-old once again appeared virtually in a New Jersey courtroom Thursday, shedding the anti-suicide smock for a standard orange jumpsuit and now boasting a thick goatee.
Although the hearing was supposed to sort out his pretrial conditions, it lasted several moments before being delayed. Until then, Sean Higgins will remain in jail, and his next court date is scheduled for September 13th.
It was the second time Sean Higgins had gone before the court since the deadly accident on August 29th, in which he is accused of hitting the Gaudreau brothers, who were riding bicycles on a rural road in Salem County, New Jersey. At his first appearance on August 30th, Higgins supposedly appeared disheartened once being told his incarceration would not be brief, seeming to have absolutely no remorse for his deadly actions.
After admitting to authorities he had consumed "5-6 beers" before the crash, Sean Higgins faces two counts of vehicular homicide, and if convicted, he could be in for a very long stretch behind bars, likely as long as 40 years.
Meanwhile, in the ice rink, the memory of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau lives on. From among the teams he played with, the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets, candlelight vigils were held on Wednesday for the memory of the brothers. Supportive fans, friends, and fellow athletes have been remembering the impacts they both had on and off the ice.
