The Washington Capitals made a surprising move last week by trading away two key players, Dmitry Orlov and Garnet Hathaway, to the Boston Bruins. This trade indicates a shift in the organization's priorities, as they are now better positioned to sell at the league's deadline than to contend for another Stanley Cup.

Alexander Ovechkin spoke with Brian MacLellan over concerns about the trade.

Ovi was very close to Orlov. When Ovechkin signed his five-year extension in 2021, team owner Ted Leonsis promised that the Caps would not rebuild during those seasons and would try to stay competitive. A selling Caps team is something Ovechkin has never been a part of in his career.

Ovechkin himself has missed five games this season, including four due to the tragic passing of his father. Without their captain and leading scorer, the Caps have gone 0-5, and injuries to other key players have derailed their season.

However, there is still hope for the Caps. They are reportedly interested in acquiring Arizona Coyotes star defenseman Jakob Chychrun, and their newfound draft capital could make that possible. Chychrun is the type of player MacLellan is looking for to begin an on-the-fly roster retooling.

The Caps currently have 64 standings points, making it almost guaranteed that they will not be a playoff team for the first time in almost a decade. The next week will be critical for the franchise, as they weigh their options at the deadline and decide how to move forward.
