According to Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs have offered the Flames 'multiple picks' for 34-year-old blueliner Chris Tanev. However, the Flames have yet to accept their offer. According to the insider, the Flames are dead set on getting a 1st round pick in the deal. Clearly, the Leafs did not offer that in their proposed package.
Now there are reportedly four other teams interested in Tanev's services meaning the Leafs will have some tough competition in a bidding war. If one of these other teams is prepared to offer that coveted 1st round pick, the Leafs could be out of luck.
David Alter, who covers the Toronto Maple Leafs for The Hockey News, is also reporting that the Flames want a 1st round pick in exchange for Tanev. He goes into a more detailed discussion about whether or not this would make any sense for the team. He points out that the team has very little draft capital to draw upon.
The Leafs have two first rounders over the next three drafts, one this year, and another in 2026. The team has no 2nd picks in that span with their next coming in 2027, barring a trade. As such, the team cannot expect to draft any impact players in the coming years, especially if they give up another 1st rounder to add Tanev. All of this begs the question of whether or not Tanev is worth giving up a 1st round pick, or even any draft picks for. The Leafs certainly have not looked like Stanley Cup contenders this year so would it make sense to take a second mortgage out on the future just for a slightly better chance at winning a round or two in the playoffs? That is a question Brad Treliving will have to answer.
