Trade finalized between the Dallas Stars and the Calgary Flames
Now that the Dallas Stars have been eliminated from the playoffs, the details of the Chris Tanev trade with the Calgary Flames have been confirmed.
The Stars acquired Tanev from the Flames in a three-way trade with the New Jersey Devils at the deadline this year. New Jersey got a 4th round pick from Dallas in exchange for retaining salary on the move while the Flames got a 2nd round pick as well as a conditional 3rd round pick from the Stars.
The condition on that pick was that the Stars had to make the Stanley Cup finals. Since the Oilers eliminated the Stars in the Western Conference finals last night, that pick will not be transferred to the Flames.
With Dallas eliminated in the West Final, Calgary will not receive the bonus conditional 2026 third-round pick from the Chris Tanev trade.
#Flames end up 0/3 on trade conditions from last season. Vegas (Hanifin) and Vancouver (Lindholm) didn't meet conditional criteria, either.
That is not quite all shew wrote for the Stars though. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed on 32 thoughts that he team is hoping to extend Tanev as well as Matt Duchene, who is also on an expiring contract this summer.
The Stars are expected to try to extend veteran center Matt Duchene and trade deadline pickup Chris Tanev before they reach unrestricted free agency on July 1, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet said on Monday's «32 Thoughts» podcast.
Extending Tanev should be the team's top priority as his defensive prowess was a cornerstone of the team's success in the playoffs this year. It would also make the trade with the Flames look even better if they ended up with Tanev for more than just one playoff run.
