Ron MacLean, the host of Hockey Night In Canada, confirmed at an event that he will be returning to the role, continuing to work for the show he has been a part of since 1986.
Speculation abounded that MacLean might depart from Hockey Night In Canada's coverage due to recent layoffs at parent company Sportsnet. However, MacLean has confirmed he will continue to host the flagship hockey program.
MacLean has been the host of HNIC since 1986, sharing hosting duties with fellow hockey legend Don Cherry, who was removed from the program in 2019 following comments Cherry made criticizing immigrants who he claimed refuse to wear the poppy for Remembrance Day, a symbolic tribute to fallen veterans. Cherry's comments, which included the phrase "you people", were widely condemned by numerous figures, leading to his dismissal by Sportsnet.
MacLean later made a statement on HNIC apologizing for Cherry's remarks, which upset Cherry supporters who felt MacLean had thrown Cherry under the bus. Don Cherry had made similar politically charged controversial statements for years before the incident.
MacLean will continue his work for HNIC, and will remain the host of the program for an undefined duration. While MacLean is still a divisive figure in hockey, his status as a longstanding voice in the sport is indisputable.
