The way fans look at contracts should be changed, the salary cap lockout in 2004-05 season really altered the way people look at things.

Players and Contracts

Prior to the lockout fans were more concerned about how well the player performed but now the narrative has changed to how well the player is playing to their contract.

It has made it to the point where fans will cheer against their favourite players in contract negotiations so their team will fair better

The Leafs are the main source of this focus, we have all heard about the core 4 and how much they make.

However to compare salaries of players the one thing people are not taking into consideration when the contract was signed.

Cap Influx

The NHL has never seen a player with a salary of at least $10 million until Jack Eichel won the cup this past season.

However Sidney Crosby won the cup making $8.7 million and accounted for 15.34% of the cap.

When turned into a cap hit of $82.5 Crosby's contract would be equivalent to $12.658 million.

This means when Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander sign their new contracts they will be higher in price but do to the cap hit.

It is about cap percentage not cap hit.
