Connor McDavid Breaks Silence on His Edmonton Future, Worrying Oilers Fans.
Connor McDavid will be a free agent in three years, and discussions about his upcoming contract have already begun. He even discussed his situation in a recent interview.
McDavid Shares his Plans for the Future
Here's what the captain of the Oilers revealed when asked about his future career plans:
"I love playing in Edmonton, and I truly feel at home there. Lauren also enjoys being in Edmonton. Many aspects align for us in Edmonton. We are very comfortable there. However, that being said, it's three years down the road. We need to assess where our lives are at and proceed from there.
I don't say this to raise eyebrows or cause panic. It's just the reality. But I genuinely love playing in Edmonton, and I am fully committed to winning here with this group...
And we're going to see it through."
He Must Choose
Any team would love to get McDavid. Only he will decide where he'll end up, as he'll be the one holding the pen when he signs.
Now, he needs to decide if he wants to stay with the team that drafted him in 2015 or move his career elsewhere.
However, he won't be able to sign anywhere. Not all teams will be able to afford him, and this will remain the case in three years.
Even if the salary cap is expected to increase, it still won't be enough to accommodate $15M for a single player, even considering McDavid's talent.
Let's hope this doesn't become a distraction for him in his pursuit of the Stanley Cup.
