Huge Development Regarding Joe Thornton's Future
Major Turnaround Concerning Thornton's Hockey Career.
Future Hall of Famer, Joe Thornton, played his last NHL game in 2022. A new development has emerged suggesting that he might come back!
In a recent interview with Elliotte Friedman, Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro mentioned that even at 44 years old, Thornton still wants to play hockey (and win a Stanley Cup).
"Ferraro crossed paths with his old friend and future Hall-of-Famer, Joe Thornton, a few times over the summer. 'He's on the ice all the time. He never officially retired,' Ferraro remarked.
Careful not to speak on behalf of his friend, Ferraro was asked if he thought Thornton might retire. 'No, I don't,' he replied. 'I don't think he will. I think he's just going to hang around. I think he could still play, though. He buzzes.' Does he want to? 'I can't speak for Jumbo, but I do. Deep down, I feel like he does.' Let's find this man a contract." - Elliotte Friedman
Thornton's Return: Can it Really Happen?
Many things will have to happen for Thornton to come back to the NHL, but the main one is a contract.
At 44, he doesn't have the speed of his golden years, and the NHL is faster than ever. At best, he'd play on the fourth line. But can he really keep up? He would probably also be looking to join a top contender team to win his first Stanley Cup. However, these teams are constrained by the salary cap.
A more realistic option would be to pursue his career in Europe. He has a strong connection to the Swiss club HC Davos, which would facilitate the process.
