Brad Marchand and Jack Edwards lose it on referees after dirty play
Brad Marchand, captain of the Boston Bruins, completely lost it when he got on the receiving end of a dirty play that went uncalled by the referees.
On Saturday afternoon, in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Brad Marchand received a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after lashing out at an official from the bench. However, he had a good reason to be angry.
Philadelphia Flyers' Erik Johnson lands brutal knee-on-knee hit on Brad Marchand and the Boston Bruins captain ends up in the penalty box for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Flyers' veteran Erik Johnson entered in a violent knee-on-knee collision with Brad Marchand. The Bruins' captain remained on the ice for a short while, then returned slowly to the bench, in pain. The referees didn't call a penalty on the play, pushing Marchand's buttons.
Marchand was simply livid that no penalty was called on Johnson's hit.
Watch his reaction in the tweets below:
"Brad Marchand takes a dangerous knee-on-knee hit from Erik Johnson, chews out the refs for not calling anything, and gets 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.
As Jack says in the clip, this type of hit ends careers. Don't blame Marchand for losing his cool here."
"Brad Marchand receives an unsportsmanlike penalty for voicing his displeasure with Erik Johnson's hit"
Bruins' play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards also ripped the referees apart in his broadcast:
"Eric Furlatt and Michael Markovic are the referees today, neither of them wears glasses on the ice."
"Department of Player Safety ought to suspend the two refs."
This type of hit has led to many injuries in hockey. Johnson, a veteran, should've been more careful. Such hits can ruin careers. Marchand, 35, is in the last stretch of his career. A major injury could put his future in jeopardy.
Even if he's been one of the most controversial players in the League for the past 15 years, Marchand also gained a lot of respect, and not a lot of players want to mess with him on the ice, especially considering Marchand's history of going a bit crazy around refs.
Earlier this season, in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marchand was sent flying head first into the boards by defenseman Jake McCabe and started to shout and cuss at him.
The Bruins will need Marchand to bring that same energy in the playoffs, as they'll look to redeem their tough elimination from last season at the hands of the Florida Panthers in the first round.
More to come.
