Stanley Cup champion Tyler Johnson signs with the Boston Bruins
The Stanley Cup champion Tyler Johnson has officially signed a Professional Tryout Agreement with the Boston Bruins organization.
Through a press release, the general manager of the Boston Bruins, Don Sweeney, revealed that he signed Tyler Johnson to a PTO:
"BOSTON - Boston Bruins General Manager Don Sweeney announced today, August 31, that the team has signed forward Tyler Johnson to a Professional Tryout Agreement (PTO).
The Spokane, Washington native was originally signed by Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2011."
With a PTO, players are given a shot at the training camp to show what they can bring to the table in order to convince teams to add them to the regular roster once the season starts.
Johnson, 34, is a 5'8" center who scored 431 points in 738 career games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Chicago Blackhawks. He was never picked in the NHL draft, making his career an even more significant accomplishment.
He notably won two Stanley Cups with the Lightning when the organization won back-to-back.
In the last season, Johnson managed to tally 17 goals and 14 assists with Connor Bedard and the struggling Chicago Blackhawks.
The Bruins have been looking for depth at the center position ever since Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci decided to retire at the end of the 2022-23 season. They made a big acquisition in the offseason with Elias Lindholm, but with Tyler Johnson, the centerline suddenly doesn't look so thin.
