The possible prison sentence that Sean Higgins could receive has been made known, and he could see himself behind bars for more than 20 years.

Mark Scheig has just been able to confirm, through Mike Greenberg of ESPN, that the driver involved in an accident with both Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Sean Higgins, has been arrested and formally charged.

According to the latest report, Sean Higgins is now in police custody and being held over the long weekend in his jail cell.

Sean Higgins is now charged with two counts of first-degree vehicular homicide, which each carry a possible sentence of 10 to 20 years in prison. That's up to 40 years inside a jail cell if he's found guilty on both, and if the judge gives him the maximum sentence. On top of this massive jail sentence, Higgins could face fines that could reach up to $200,000 per death, meaning he could be on the hook for up to $400,000 in penalties.

«After all, even though drunk driving is a scourge that is taken more seriously than before, it remains something that can easily be avoided but isn't always.

The message we must take from all of this is that there are solutions instead of driving while intoxicated.»

- Charles-Alexis Brisebois

As Charles-Alexis Brisebois noted above, it was a completely avoidable accident. This should be the tipping point. With alternatives like Uber, taxis, and friends, there is just no excuse for driving under the influence. Let's hope a major lesson is learned from this devastation.
