With Colorado needing to add some goaltending help to their roster after a variety of struggles from their netminders, the team went out and acquired Mackenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks.
The trade was originally announced by Elliotte Friedman on X.
There is no confirmed word yet on the return for Blackwood, but according to Friedman it's a package including Alex Georgiev, Nikolai Kovalenko, and a second-round pick.
Kyle Cushman reports the whole package is Georgiev, Kovalenko and two picks head to San Jose while Blackwood, Givani Smith, and a late pick is being sent to the Avalanche.
It's a sign that Colorado was fed up with their goaltending production and needed to bring in someone to stop the bleeding while they still have some momentum.
In acquiring Blackwood, the Avalanche add a solid and dependable starter to their team and while he's struggled at times, has proved he can be good in a pinch.
For his career, Blackwood has an 81-91-25 record as well as a 3.07 GAA and .904 SV% with time spent with New Jersey and San Jose and ironically was traded on his birthday.
Colorado desperately needed some type of stability between the pipes as they have not gotten it at all from Georgiev, Justus Annunen, and Scott Wedgewood. All in all, the Avalanche have used five separate goaltenders this season.
Combined the team goaltenders have a 3.14 GAA but an abysmal .880 SV%, and while the team can do its best to stop opponents from getting shots through, the goalies just aren't making the saves.
Georgiev will get a chance at redemption in San Jose and will be the team's number one going forward. It's a tough pill to swallow for Colorado to get rid of their one highly-touted goaltender but results are results.
This season he has an 8-7-0 record with a 3.38 GAA and .874 SV%.
