The mid-season trade between Columbus and Pittsburgh was an interesting one, and now, the conditions on the deal have officially been met.
With Alex Nylander struggling in Pittsburgh, the team decided to flip him and a sixth-round pick for Emil Bemstrom, and with 11 goals in 23 games, it's safe to say that Columbus are happy with the deal. The terms of the deal state that if Bemstrom were to notch six goals as a Penguin, the deal would go from a 2026 sixth-round pick to a third-round pick, but now, he is ruled out for the Penguins season finale.
Draft Pick Condition Update:
If #LetsGoPens forward Emil Bemström plays tonight and scores 3 goals, the 2026 6th round pick sent to #CBJ in the Alex Nylander trade will upgrade to a 2026 3rd round pick.
If he does not score 3 goals, #CBJ will receive the 2026 6th round pick.
This now means that the Blue Jackets will indeed receive the sixth-round draft pick, but with Nylander at 26-years of age showing plenty of potential, they may be happy with that return.
Penguins fans weren't too upset to see Nylander go, as shown here by the initial reaction to the trade;
Nylander had so many opportunities to take an NHL forward spot. He failed every time. Can't possibly be sorry to see him go
With Bemstrom's contract running out at the end of this season, it's tough to see who won the deal, but at the time, it was a deal that made sense for both teams.
