The Edmonton Oilers have had several goaltenders throughout the last few years. This season in particular has been a bad one for Edmonton Oilers goalies. With the struggles of the Oilers goaltending and them being in the news so much it is only fitting that one of their former goaltenders now makes news as well.
Today one of the most notable players to tend the goal for the Oilers Mikko Koskinen has decided to call it a career. According to sources in Finland Mikko Koskinen has informed them he will retire.
Mikko Koskinen had a bit of an unconventional NHL career. After coming over to North America with the New York Islanders Mikko Koskinen failed to get his NHL career off the ground. He then returned to Europe for six seasons before getting another chance with the Edmonton Oilers.
In his career with the Edmonton Oilers Mikko Koskinen played 168 NHL games had a 3.01 goals against average and a 0.906 save percentage with 6 shutouts. He showed some real promise that he could be the goalie the team had been looking for. However, after two strong seasons with the Oilers he started to fall back off. Eventually he left the Oilers and headed back to Europe where he played in Switzerland for the last two seasons.
He was scheduled to be back in Finland next season with Kiekkp-Espoo but that will now not happen. We wish Mikko Koskinen all the best as he transitions to the next phase of his career.
