The St. Louis Blues shocked the hockey community in the past week when they made two offer sheets targeted at Edmonton Oilers' players Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
Stan Bowman, the Oilers' general manager, is now under pressure to find a solution to this issue.
The Province's reporter Patrick Johnston wrote in a recent paper that the Vancouver Canucks could be in a great position to give the Oilers a hand.
He stated that the Oilers, who are reportedly looking to create cap space by trading either Brett Kulak or Cody Ceci, could take Tucker Poolman's contract in return instead of draft picks.
Drafted 127th overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 2013, Tucker Poolman, 31 hasn't played since January 2023 because of migraines and is expected to retire at the end of his four-year, $2.5M AAV contract after the next season. In 163 total NHL games with the Winnipeg Jets and the Vancouver Canucks, he scored 23 points, including six goals between 2017 and 2023.
If the Oilers end up getting him, they could ship him off to the LTIR, while the Canucks would get an upgrade at the blue line.
If this deal were to happen, the Canucks would likely be more interested in Brett Kulak than Cody Ceci.
Over the course of his career, Kulak was often underrated. He has great defensive and skating skills in addition to making smart plays all over the ice.
In the 2023-24 regular season, his third in Edmonton, Kulak scored 16 points in 82 games. He added eight points in the Oilers' Stanley Cup Finals run during the playoffs. Since he was drafted in 2012 by the Calgary Flames, he showed constant improvement throughout his career with the Flames, Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.
He would be a much more interesting option for the Canucks than their current third pair defenseman Derek Forbort as well as Noah Juulsen, the team's seventh defenseman who would need to be sent down to the minors if Kulak were to join the organization.
The Oilers have only 48 hours to make a move before Broberg and Holloway join the St. Louis Blues. Make sure to stay tuned as we bring the latest developments to you.
