The 2023 trade deadline deal to send Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils was an absolute blockbuster, and now in a turn of events that no one saw coming, the conditions of the deal have all been finalized. While many expected the Sharks to be getting the Devils 2024 first-round pick, they have now shockingly been eliminated from playoff contention, meaning that it will be their second-round pick heading to the Sharks in the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft.
As a result of the trade, San Jose have already received young Fabian Zetterlund who has a solid 41 points in 78 games played, as well as the Devils 2023 first-round draft pick that turned into the talented Quentin Musty. Most in the NHL expected the Devils to go deep in the playoffs this season, making the conditions on the pick an obvious move for the Sharks to make, but after a disappointing campaign, they'll unfortunately only receive a second-round pick.
Now, the Sharks have not only their own first-round pick, which could end up as No. 1 overall, but also the Penguins as a result of the Erik Karlsson deal, and with their own second and the Devils second round pick, they now have four shots at top tier talents as they look to continue their rebuild. As for the Devils, they now look at their pick as either a potential asset to get a veteran star and help a 2024-25 playoff push, or they look to add another talented young name to their prospect pool, but either way, this deal will be one that's remembered by both teams for a long time to come.
