The New York Islanders have struggled as of late under Patrick Roy, and now they've been dealt another heartbreaking blow.

After seven losses in their past eight games, the New York Islanders now find themselves sitting four points behind the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, and it's not getting any better. Now, the team have officially announced that Scott Mayfield, a key defenseman will now miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery.

#Isles Injury Update: Scott Mayfield had successful season ending surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery and not have any issues with his summer training regiment.

It was a rollercoaster season for the Islanders, and a year that once held so much promise as they sat in a playoff spot just a matter of weeks ago, but now they're behind the eight ball as they look to miraculously turn their season around and make a Stanley Cup run.

Mayfield has been a key piece for this team in 2023-24, playing over 20 minutes per night on a tough New York blue line, but unfortunately, an injury plagued season has now come to an end. Roy is now 11-11-4 in 26 games as the Head Coach of the New York Islanders, and it's safe to say that everything that could go wrong has gone wrong for him in his short stint behind the bench.

Now, the Islanders will look to the summer as they look to re-tool this talented but ageing roster to compete with the best in the Metropolitan Division, whether or not that involves Patrick Roy behind the bench or a transition to the front office.
