Things are once again heating up around the 2018 World Junior scandal, as Alex Formenton, a prime suspect in the case, has signed a new contract.
Formenton Inks a Deal in Europe
Formenton, who hasn't played an NHL game since the 2021-22 season, has officially re-signed with the club he played for last season in Switzerland.
Alex Formenton has signed a deal to return to Ambr-Piotta in the Swiss League until Christmas. It can be extended through the rest of the season. #Sens
The Senators opted not to re-sign Formenton once it was revealed that he was a prime suspect in the assault allegations against the 2018 Team Canada World Junior roster.
Ambr-Piotta Speak on Formenton
Formenton's Swiss club Ambr-Piotta released a statement along with the news of his signing, giving fans an update on his current situation.
"The club is aware that there is an ongoing investigation and to date there has been no charge nor conviction against the player. The club reserves the right to review the contractual situation with the player should new elements emerge.
"The player, for his part, has the possibility of returning to the NHL at any time if the second investigation were to resolve like the first with nothing done. Out of respect for the ongoing investigations, the player and club will not release further statements on the situation."
While it doesn't look like Formenton will be returning to North America any time soon, he's keeping his options open anyways.
