Sidney Crosby's future in Pittsburgh in jeopardy due to recent reports
Sidney Crosby, along with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, have been cornerstones of the Pittsburgh Penguins for almost 20 years. Unfortunately, time is running out.
Sidney Crosby is eligible to sign an extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins as soon as July 1st, but recent reports suggest even if he does sign it will be very short term.
Money is luckily not a concern for Crosby's next contract, as Evgeni Malkin is expected to retire in about two years and the salary cap will be going up significantly.
«As previously reported, Crosby may command a higher cap hit than the $8.7 million from each of his past 16 seasons. But his new contract will not go into effect until 2025-26, and the Penguins project to have considerably more cap space to work with for that season and beyond in part because the cap is expected to exceed $90 million by then, and also due to Malkin's anticipated retirement after his current contract expires.»
However, Crosby may not be signing the final NHL contract of his career, leaving him open to leave to another team; possibly the Montreal Canadiens or Colorado Avalanche, if he sees no shot at the playoffs in Pittsburgh.
«Crosby is not necessarily seeking his final NHL contract. However, he also hasn't set a firm date for when he plans to retire, so a shorter-term deal than he's signed in the past is appealing, a source said.»
