One of them is Toronto's Auston Matthews.
Every time Matthews gets on the ice, something special happens. He's a constant menace for his opponents. His shooting abilities, added to his skating skills and defensive responsabilities make him one of the best players in the whole league.
Last night, he once again delivered an impressive performance against the Columbus Blue Jackets, scoring his 29th goal of the season, in just 32 games.
Matthews gave his team the lead in the 2nd period with that goal. However, the Leafs still lost in overtime, after Ilya Samsonov allowed six goals in 20 shots.
This goal was the 9th straight game that he scored against the Blue Jackets. His next goal could beat a 37-year-old record set by Gretzky himself.
Gretzky scored in 14 consecutive games against the Maple Leafs between 1983 and 1987. Matthews just needs five more goals to reach it, and a sixth one to beat it.
Unfortunately, fans will need to wait at least two more years before seeing it happen. The Leafs and the Blue Jackets won't meet again this season, and considering they face off two or three times a year, we could witness Matthews reaching the record in 2025-26.
